Asia Leaders’ Meeting and 2nd ISDR Asia Partnership Meeting to begin tomorrow
The Asia Leaders’ Meeting towards Implementation of the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction in Asia will begin here tomorrow. The Asia Leaders’ meeting will be attended by key dignitaries and senior ministers from the nations of China, Indonesia, Japan, Malaysia, Mongolia, South Korea, and Thailand; Ms. Margareta Wahlstrom, Special Representative of the United Nations Secretary General for Disaster Risk Reduction, delegates from various countries and international organisations, and officials of Government of India and the State Governments.
The Asia Leaders’ Meeting will be followed by the 2nd ISDR Asia Partnership (IAP) meeting of 2015, a key regional platform providing necessary consultation and technical support to implement the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction (SFDRR) 2015-2030. The focus of this second IAP meeting, jointly organized by The United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNISDR) and Ministry of Home Affairs, Government of India, is to collectively set the policy direction for the implementation of the SFDRR in Asia and discuss substantive preparation for the seventh Asia Ministerial Conference on Disaster Risk Reduction (AMCDRR) for the Asian Regional implementation plan of the Sendai Framework, scheduled to be held in New Delhi from November 14-17, 2016.
During the inaugural session, Minister of State for Home Affairs, Shri Kiren Rijiju, will be sworn in as the Asia Leader for Disaster Risk Reduction, giving an impetus to Government of India’s efforts to facilitate regional cooperation toward enabling community resilience in the Asia region. The Union Home Minister, Shri Rajnath Singh, will also address the session.
Government representatives of IAP member countries and key stakeholder organisations will continue to meet over the next two days in a series of consultations to share and ideate strategies around effective implementation of the SFDRR at the regional, national and local levels across the Asia region.
The SFDRR 2015-2030 was adopted at the Third UN World Conference in Sendai, Japan, on March 18, 2015 as a successor instrument to the Hyogo Framework for Action 2005-2015. Building on the achievements and learning from the Hyogo Framework, the Sendai Framework focuses on preventing new disaster risks, reducing existing disaster risks that also strengthen resilience and underlines various measures to prevent and reduce hazard exposure and vulnerability, increase preparedness and recovery.
