In democracy, there should be no character assassination: Rajnath Singh

Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) president Rajnath Singh, speaking exclusively to Sudhir Chaudhary, Editor of Zee News r5defended Narendra Modi for using the phrase ‘Khooni Panja’ earlier in an election rally in Chhattisgarh. “He used the word for Congress symbol and not for any individual.” The BJP president also appeared to be defending Amit Shah in the recent snooping on a woman by Gujarat Police. Following are the edited excerpts of the interview:

Question1: Who is Amit Shah, the former Gujarat home minister, referring to as ‘Saheb’ in the tape?

Ans1 :I think that after the letter from the woman’s father there is nothing more left to be discussed on this issue. If a father pleads for the safety of his family from the home minister of a state, what is wrong in this? It is the duty of any state government to protect people’s wealth and lives.

Question 2:The conversation in the tapes suggests that the queries by Amit Shah from police official GL Singhal were meant for spying and not for providing security.

Ans2 : In my opinion, all queries in this regard should be directed to the woman’s father. He has clarified everything. There is no question of debate on this issue. There has been no question of harassment. In a democracy, however, there should not be any character assassination.

Question 3:Should Amit Shah break silence on the snooping scandal?

Ans3 : I believe that in the season of elections there is no need to speak unnecessarily on matters that would attract accusations and allegations. It is better to speak on the issues that are important for the party and the nation. Like I said earlier, if anyone wants to know anything regarding the case, he or she should go and talk to her (woman’s) father.
