Raksha Mantri Pays Tribute to Major Somnath Sharma on His ‘Balidan Diwas’

Raksha Mantri Shri Rajnath Singh paid solemn tributes to Major Somnath Sharma, India’s first Param Vir Chakra awardee, on his Balidan Diwas. Remembering the war hero’s unparalleled courage, the Raksha Mantri said that Major Sharma’s valour and supreme sacrifice in the defence of the nation would forever inspire generations of Indians.

Major Somnath Sharma, serving in the Kumaon Regiment, displayed extraordinary bravery during the Battle of Badgam in Kashmir on November 3, 1947. Despite being heavily outnumbered and wounded, he led his troops with determination and courage, holding his position until his last breath.

Awarded the Param Vir Chakra posthumously, Major Sharma’s heroic actions played a pivotal role in safeguarding Srinagar and preventing the enemy from advancing further into the Kashmir Valley. His legacy continues to be celebrated as a symbol of selfless service, patriotism, and dedication to duty.

Commemorating *Balidan Diwas*, the Defence Minister reiterated the nation’s gratitude to its soldiers who have laid down their lives in the line of duty, ensuring the security and integrity of India.
